// GLOSSARY
Technical Glossary
Canonical definitions of the terms we use at FARO. They serve as internal reference to align criteria across teams and as a starting point for anyone who wants to understand what's behind each concept.
- AI Adoption
- Systematic process of integrating AI capabilities into a development team's daily workflows, measuring impact on delivery speed, code quality, and innovation capacity. It's not 'using AI' — it's changing how the team produces software.
- Fractional Technical Leadership
- Hiring model where a senior technical leader (Tech Lead, Staff Engineer, Engineering Manager) joins the company part-time — typically 1-2 days/week — to provide architectural direction, mentor the team, and unblock critical technical decisions, without the cost of a full-time hire.
- 1:1 Mentoring
- Personalized, confidential guidance for developers and tech leads who want to accelerate their technical and leadership growth. Regular sessions focused on real challenges: architecture, career decisions, team management, tool adoption.
- SDUI (Server-Driven UI)
- Pattern where the server dictates the structure and content of the user interface, enabling updates to flows and screens without deploying a new app version. Critical in regulated contexts (fintech, healthcare) where release cycles are slow.
- Clean Architecture
- Concentric-layer architecture (Entities, Use Cases, Interface Adapters, Frameworks) where dependencies point inward. Isolates business logic from frameworks, databases, and UI, enabling long-term testability and maintainability.
- Android Modularization
- Division of the app into independent modules (feature, core, data) with clear boundaries and controlled dependencies. Enables parallel compilation, team ownership, code reuse, and fault isolation. Requires dependency governance and inter-module contracts.
- BFF (Backend for Frontend)
- API layer designed specifically for a client's needs (mobile app, web, TV). Aggregates, transforms, and filters data from downstream services, reducing over-fetching/under-fetching and decoupling frontend evolution from microservices evolution.
- Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP)
- Technology for sharing business logic (networking, persistence, domain) across Android, iOS, Desktop, Web, and backend using Kotlin. Not 'write once run anywhere' for UI — UI stays native (Compose, SwiftUI); only what makes sense is shared.
- Couchbase Lite
- Embedded NoSQL database with offline-first sync and automatic replication to Couchbase Capella/Sync Gateway. Solves field apps that work offline and sync when connectivity returns, with built-in conflict resolution.
- KYC/AML
- Know Your Customer / Anti-Money Laundering. Regulatory processes to verify identity, assess risk, and prevent money laundering. In fintech apps involves facial biometrics, document validation, sanctions screening, and full audit trail of decisions.
